Fraud Alert!

The CT State Police Woodbury Resident Trooper's Office has asked us to pass along an important fraud alert to all area seniors. In this fraud, the victim is contacted by phone by a person misrepresenting themselves as a U.S. Customs agent at the Canadian Border. The victim is told that a family member, such as a grandchild, is facing a penalty fine for not claiming items bought in Canada upon reentering the U.S. The caller asis to spea with "Grandma or Grandpa" and if they are lucky the victims take the caller for a family member and are told to transfer money, in this case $3500.00, through Western Union or other services in order to help them pay the fine. The victims are then told that the money will be sent back to them within 5 days.

Be aware that no official Government agency will ever solicit cash by wire transfer to assist other family members. Always check with that family member first and verify that all information is correct. Take phone numbers and names down and contact the police before attempting any transactions. If you are ever in doubt call the police and ask for assistance.
