Burns Dinner

Wednesday, January 25 at noon. Take an armchair trip to Scotland with us as we celebrate the famous poet Robert Burns Birthday with a traditional Burns dinner. We'll have a burns procession complete with bagpipes, the tasting of the haggis with optional Whiskey sauce, jokes, poetry, and a complete dinner featuring Scottish traditional foods of fowl ( chicken) tatties (mashed potatoes) onion gravy, green pease ( peas with mint), glazed carrots, scones and fresh fruit with Scottish shortbread. Special guests will enchant us with stories and poetry based on the "Scottish bard's work" Don't miss this cultural virtual excursion, and a really great meal too. $10 per person-to be paid when sign up at the office no later than January 13.

Friends General Meeting

Foot Care Clinic

The clinic is a subsidized program utilizing grant funds and provided by a practicing Podiatrist. Appointments are scheduled the third Wednesday of each month. The cost is $10. per appointment, 6 appointments per year. Some restrictions do apply. Call the center for details.

Holiday ornament crafts

Mondays, December 5, 12, 19 from 1-3 pm. You have asked for simple crafts to make for the holidays..here they are. No sewing, no experience necessary. Instructor Dagmar Ferguson will present 3 separate projects, one each week. Complete the whole project in two hours. Take one class or take them all. $5.00 for materials fee to instructor each week. Sign up in the office and see a sample of the crafts.

New Winter Weather Policy

Effective immediately, the Woodbury Senior Center will handle winter weather schedule changes independently. We will no longer automatically close when Region 14 schools are closed.
Instead, please follow these instructions: Should inclement weather occur, watch and listen for announcements on the following television and radio stations: WFSB- Channel 3, WTNH-Channel 8, and NBC-30-Channel 6, along with WTIC AM/FM radio. You may also check our website for updated information.

Extreme Weather - We Know a Thing or Two

Today we are featuring a program with meteorologist Art Horn. His topic is: Extreme Weather- Attack from the Sky. Maybe we should help give the talk: the presentation was cancelled once for the hurricane and cancelled a second time due to the flash floods that caused havoc here this fall. Today's forecast? A nor'easter. Really.

We'd like to thank all those who joined the Woodbury Super Seniors Walking Team at the Go The Distance Fundraiser for the Woodbury Scholarship Fund. You raised $500, which is enough to fund a scholarship for a graduating senior this year - AND you looked great in your newspaper photo! Congrats to all who participated.

We'd also like to announce the winners of the Wellness Bingo Project - congratulations to Betty A., Bart B., Abby W., Delores G., Rose M., JoAnn P., Mary P. and Grand Prize Winner Peg R.! 60 seniors took part in the bingo, trying out healthy activities and having fun along the way. JOIN THE CONNECTICUT AARP TAX-AIDE VOLUNTEER TEAM

The CT AARP Tax-Aide (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) program is seeking volunteers to provide one-on-one help in the preparation of income tax returns. Computer literate volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

Volunteer as a Counselor and/or as a Leadership Coordinator. You do not need to be an AARP member or retired. Training in cooperation with the IRS will commence in December for the 2011 tax season.

Tax-Aide is a free, confidential service run by volunteers who prepare Federal and Connecticut tax returns. The service is offered to low and middle income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to those 60 and older.

Pie Baking Contest and Pie Day Social

We're celebrating all things pie on Friday, July 23! Fruit pie, cream pie, tart pies and sweet pies- what's not to love?

Interested in entering the pie baking contest> Here are the complete rules:

Pie Baking Contest Rules

You may enter as many pies as you like, but you must pre-register by July 20. This contest is for seniors (60+) only. You do not need to be a Woodbury resident to enter.
Store-bought pie crusts are allowed. Store-bought pies are not.
Your homemade pie(s) must be brought to the Center on Friday, July 23 between 8-10 am Pies must be accompanied by a card with your name and phone number. Please also bring a copy of the recipe.
Pies will be sampled by a 3-member panel of judges. Judges are Gerry Stomski, First Selectman, Betsey Palmer, Director of Elderly Services, and Sandee Vicari, Director of Social Servies. All entries will be blinded (judges will not know who created each pie until after the judging is completed) The remaining pie will be sliced and served at the Pie Social.
Pies will be judged on appearance and taste.
Prizes will include ribbons for 1st through 4th place, and a gift certificate for the 1st place winner.

Parade participation cancelled

Sadly, the Senior Marathoners will NOT be marching in Sunday's Memorial Day Parade. Temperatures are predicted to be around 90* with humidity. Bring a lawn chair, a hat or umbrella for shade, and a cool drink, and enjoy watching the best parade around. We'll save the walking for a more temperate time.

Geocaching Postponed

Plants Needed

The Plant Swap is coming next week! Bring your extra annuals, your thinned perennials, your unused seeds. Herbs, mini- trees, you name it; bring it to our Plant Swap. Bring something, and take something new home.

We're also accepting items for our garden. Do you have lettuce plants, seeds or other garden items you're not needing? Bring it in!

Bus out of Service for Repair

The Senior Bus will be out of service for several days while the air conditioner is being repaired. The bus will NOT be in service on Thursday, May 15, Friday, May 16 or Monday, May 19. We're back to our normal schedule beginning Tuesday, May 20.

School Budget Vote Affects CLasses and Programs

The Region 14 school budget referendum scheduled for Tuesday May 4 requires a few changes to our program calendar. The following programs will meet at OLD TOWN HALL at the corner of Main Street and Mountain Road:

Pilates will meet at 8:30 am
Falls Prevention Tai Chi will meet at 9:30 am
Strength Training will meet at 1:00 pm

Also that day - SENIOR COUNCIL BAKE SALE. We need your help - please bake for our sale, which will be held at the Center all day Tuesday, May 4.

Thank you to all who came to the Center yesterday to enjoy an afternoon of recognition and fun. The play was wonderful (Thank you, Rich Reimhold and company!), the desserts decadent, the coffee strong and hot, and the company, delightful. As Betsey said, we know our volunteers are the BEST, and we appreciate you - every day!!!!!
